Many people accumulate a stash of broken or mismatched jewelry over the years. This usually winds up in a box where it is eventually forgotten. But, there is a way you can turn this into a little extra spending money this month. With today’s gold prices, even a small amount of gold can be valuable. Here are a few signs it is time to let go of that broken chain in your jewelry box.
It’s Broken
This one should be obvious, but you would be amazed at how many people hold onto their broken jewelry for years. Often this starts with the best of intentions. “Oh, I’ll get it fixed and wear it again,” but it often doesn’t go this way and you wind up with an expensive paperweight. Even if you just choose to sell it as scrap, a half ounce necklace is still worth several hundred dollars.
You Haven’t Worn it in Over a Year
This is a variation of the “if you haven’t used it in a year,” moving rule. Basically, this says if you haven’t used an item in over a year then you should get rid of it to reduce clutter. The same goes for your jewelry. When was the last time you wore it? Chances are you have something that has been sitting unused for over a year. Go through your jewelry and find out if anything you have falls into this category.
It’s Missing Pieces
This is another example of knowing when it’s time to let go. If you lost the match to that earring five years ago, chances are the match is gone. At the same time if you have a necklace that is missing pieces of it then it may be time to sell it. Go through what you have lying around. You never know what you could wind up with when you sell your unwanted gold in Chicago.
