Leading Causes of Sciatica

This is the pain that runs down your sciatic nerve, which goes from your low back to your buttocks and legs, on either or both sides. Don’t know what you did to come down with this condition? Here’s a look at common causes:

Trauma
When an accident happens, it can lead to a compression on your nerve by strong external forces. So if you’re involved in a motor accident, suffer from a bad fall or get hit by a ball while playing football and other sports, then it’s possible that your injury might not just be limited to bruises, but can also lead to nerve compression, resulting in long-lasting health consequences for you.

Degenerative disc disease
While a certain level of degeneration is to be expected as inherently typical of the aging process, when people get one or two degenerated discs especially along the lower back, then sciatica is a likely result. Spinal degeneration can also come along with bone spurs which irritate the nerve as well, leading to more another instance of lower back pain.

Lumbar herniated disc
When a herniated disc happens, the inner material leaks. This has an irritating or pinching effect on the contiguous nerve root, which results in sciatica. Herniated discs are more commonly known as a slipped disc or ruptured disc, says Spine Health.

Isthmic spondylolisthesis
This happens when a tiny stress fracture makes it possible for a vertebra to slip forward to an adjacent vertebra. The displaced vertebra then hits the nerve and causes sciatic pain in your lower back or legs.

Spinal Tumors
Any abnormal growths along your spine can cause your vertebra to move and be displaced which, of course, pinch or irritate the nerve.

So if you think you have back or leg pain that goes beyond the norm, don’t hesitate to consult with a doctor. Find out now so you can get the treatment you need sooner than later.
