When do businesses need to have handrails according to the ADA?

Section 505, Chapter 5 of the ADA’s 2010 Standards provides information on their rules regarding handrails. Section 505.1 states that handrails are required along ramps that have a rise of more than six inches, on newly built stairwells, or those that are removed and replaced during alternations.

Where should they be placed?

Handrails for stairs and ramps should be placed on both sides, along the entire length of each flight of stairs or ramp run. Handrails may only be on one side in assembly areas and they need to be within the width of the aisle. The handrail must be at a consistent height. The top gripping surface can’t be more than 38 inches above the stair or ramp. If there’s ay confusion about the height, try placing the rail at the 36 inches.

How should they be built?

The handrail gripping surface needs to run the entire length of the rail with no obstructions on the top. Only 20% of the bottom may be obstructed. Horizontal projections such as handrail brackets cannot be any closer than 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the gripping surface. Round handrails should be 1 1/4 to two inches wide. The perimeter of non-circular handrails must be between 4 to 6 1/4 inches, with a cross-section diameter of no more than 2 1/4 inches.

What are the state requirements?

Hawaii state requirements require businesses to place handrails at least 42 inches from the ground. Commercial guardrails need to be 42 inches above the stairs, and stair rails need to be 30 to 38 inches above the stairs. Handrails can be no more than four inches from the wall they’re affixed to.
