Do’s and Don’ts after Your Eye Surgery

by | Jul 20, 2017 | Health

If you’ve just had cataract surgery, you’ll need to take it easy and give yourself more than enough recovery time. Here are some essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:

Do

Take your eye drops regularly, says the WebMD. Dryness and irritation are common side-effects of eye surgery. Eye drops should keep the irritation and dryness down.

Don’t

Forgetting to wear your protective goggles or shield. You’ll need to wear it even when you sleep, especially during the first week after the surgery. Your googles keep your eyes protected so you won’t accidentally rub them and risk an infection.

Do

Wear your eye protection for a month. Or at least until you feel fit and ready to start exercising and engaging in sports activities again.

Don’t

Driving. You might encounter temporary vision problems. It’s best to let someone else behind the wheel and take you home from the eye care center after your surgery. Give it a few weeks or a month before you slide back behind the wheel of your car.

Do

Keep away from any dusty or dirty areas or environments. If your home is filled with both, get someone to clean your house before you get back from the surgery.

Don’t

Not wearing protection against bright sunshine. Since your eyes might still be sensitive after the surgery, it would be best to protect your eyes from scarring by wearing sunglasses on bright days.

Do

Get help. Putting any pressure on your eye after the surgery isn’t a great idea. That’s why you should avoid any lifting or strenuous activities. You’ll also want someone to handle the chores you normally do.

Don’t

Being careless. Walk around with care and caution. Bumping into objects could hurt you and could affect your eye’s rate of recovery. For more questions or clarifications, reach out to your doctor. Make sure s/he’s with a reputable eye care center.
