Fun Facts about Blue Crabs

All seafood lovers know how tasty steamed blue crabs are; but here are some fun facts that you may not know about these unique creatures:

  • The scientific name for blue crabs is Callinectes sapdius, which means “beautiful savory swimmer.” Quite a fitting name, don’t you think?

  • There are two ways to distinguish between male and female crabs. The most common method is to look at its apron. Males have an apron that resembles the Washington monument; the other way is to look at their claws. Female claws are tipped with a reddish orange color and gives them a very distinct look.

  • Blue crabs can be found along the coastlines of the Atlantic, all the way down to South America and Argentina coastlines

  • The largest crab ever caught measured more than 10 inches across and weighed in at more than one pound

  • Blue crabs are cannibals. Usually they feed on snails, small fish, plants and mussels; but if there is nothing else to eat, they’ll eat other blue crabs

  • Females mate only once throughout their lifetime; they can release over 2 million eggs per brood

  • The blue crab is the official Maryland state crustacean
